Gantt trouble

D

Dan

Hello all,
I am playing around with using the project gantt chart to track crops on a
fish farm. i.e. creating a farm crop map. So rather than "tasks" I would have
"ponds", fish would stay in a pond untill they grew too large and required
splitting. I would be able to track the split in the original pond by simply
splitting the task (my case pond), however I then become unstuck as I cant
track the new destination pond by a link from the split point. The link
always occurs from the end of the task (in my case pond).

1. Is there any way I can create a link from the end of the primary split
rather than the end of the task?

I would then like to identify when a pond has recieved a new crop of fish
rather than just being split down. I see no other way than to simply keep
creating splits as the nature of the gantt will not permit new task on the
same time timeline, i.e. they will always go below the first task.

2. Can I change the colour of individual split bars without changing the
colour of all the bars in a task? This will enable a differentiation between
crops.

I really hope I have provided enough context to interperate my questions.

Thanks in Advance.

Hi

What you are looking for is not possible. Two components of a split task are
one entity, so they remain in one colour and links can be provided only with
start and finish of the total activity.

I would recommend that for all works in one pond, you could make one summary
task. Then all smaller components of work for that pond would be individual
sub tasks under it. Your project seems interesting and if you send me your
file with splits, I could suggest division of the project through Summary and
sub tasks.

I hope it helps.

Dan,

Your requirements are an interesting use of Microsoft Project. Whilst it is
not possible to link from the end of the first part of a "split" task it is
possible to show subsequent "tasks" scheduled proportionately from the start
of the split task using the SS dependency in the predecessors tab with a lag
of x% where x is the amount of the overall duration or the split tasks
duration. For example if you could show the new pond commencing once half
the duration of the originating pond had passed.

You might also want to look at creating some custom task fields
(Tools>Customise>Fields>Task>Text) using defined lists to attach to your
tasks - so you could differentiate between new crop, transferred crop. You
could then look at "Grouping" your tasks by this value.
