Gaps in Word 2000, using XP

We have gaps in occasional sentencence when using justify. The gap comes after the first letter in each word over the whole line. This never used to happen using Windows 98. I have tried the 'fully justify as Word 6" and do not want to hypenate. Any Suggestions?
