Garbled Font Substitution in PowerPoint 2007

I frequently have to batch print a lot of PowerPoint files and do not have
time to manually check/edit every slide of every file, but PowerPoint 2007
doesn't appear to handle missing fonts correctly.

Whereas PowerPoint 2003 would substitute Arial for any fonts missing from a
PowerPoint file, PowerPoint 2007 leaves garbage and/or blank areas instead.
This occurs on multiple XP Pro machines and cannot find any resolution to
this problem myself or in online searches.

This makes me VERY weary of using PowerPoint 2007 if it can't even guarantee
printing correct text for whole files, even if it's not the original font.
Like I said, I don't have time to manually check EVERY file for missing fonts
and do font substitution manually. Is this something else KNOWN to be broken
in PowerPoint 2007?

Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

See if installing a Windows-certified printer driver and setting it as the
default printer resolves the issue.

Unfortunately, that doesn't help either. ANY printer driver tried, whether
built-into Windows or not, yields the same results. It looks like the only
solution is going to be to throw away PowerPoint 2007 and go back to
PowerPoint 2003 until if and when Microsoft can fix the font substitution
problem in 2007. Anyone got several copies of 2003 they wanna trade for
copies of 2007? :-(

Looking all over online discussion groups, it looks like there are LOTS of
problems with Office 2007 that just don't seem worth the hassle...and
Microsoft itself is little if any help at all.

See if installing a Windows-certified printer driver and setting it as the

There are a few that use some proprietary TrueType fonts that we first
noticed the problem with, but those particular fonts can be installed to
resolved the problem. I don't recall other specific fonts that still show up
garbled or blank, but since PowerPoint 2007 won't properly substitute these
fonts if not installed or embedded in the documents, it's too disconcerting
that other non-native Windows/Office fonts we aren't aware of may have the
same problem, which we could only verify by manually checking every slide of
every .ppt(x) file (anywhere from just dozens up to tens of thousands of
slides per week).

UPDATE: Actually, it looks like it MIGHT be printer driver related...though
it appears many of XP's own included drivers don't support it either. Using
an HP LaserJet 9xxx-series PS driver and setting it as default works fine,
but unfortunately still doesn't provide a good solution.

It would be nice if Microsoft would let people know that you might lose
functionality if you have certain printers and provide a comprehensive list
of at least OS-included drivers that won't fully work with Office 2007 apps.
Why do they feel the need to 'dumb down' the apps in this respect?

ANOTHER UPDATE: Ack! Well, even different printer drivers seem to affect
only SOME fonts and not others. While the LJ9050 made visable a missing
Univers font on one .ppt, some others w/ a proprietary Sans Serif font still
show garbage. Are there any known Windows-certified fonts that should fix
ALL font/display issues???
