Gdi.exe crash: Cause?

I just loaded Word 2000(via Works Suite 2001) onto a new (for me)
desktop machine while my regular laptop's in the shop for repairs, and
the second time I tried using it on the new machine, I got this error
message:

WINWORD caused a general protection fault
in module GDI.EXE at 0026:000014a0.

Did you install a default printer? It doesn't have to be physically present,
but Word can't work without a printer driver.

Done and the problem's apparently since been resolved by a
repair/reinstall from CD-ROM.
