General Add-ins, auto re-enable

Hi there,

Appologies if this is the incorrect group.

For any add in we create and existing ones we roll out we may have a
problem. It affects ones we'll be creating but more importantly, one from an
existing product. One thing I do know is that it's not specific to the
add-in, so forgive as I refer in general terms here.

If we run Word 2003 (On XP Pro) and load a very large docuemnt, or do
something to cause Word to go in to a 'Not responding' mode - we then End
task or close to exit Word prematurely.

Our users often do this!

When word re opens it asks if you want to disable the add in. User often
blndly click and inavertently dis-able the add in.

It's very important that that add in isn't disabled.

Now we know that users could visit (in word) Help>About>Enable Addins, but
our superiors tell us that this is too complicated for amny users.

Is there any way to prevent word disabling the add in. Or to re-enable the
add in automatically? Maybe via a switch after word.exe ? (eg. word.exe
-autoenable...).

Many thanks for any help. I thought you guys would have the most experience
in this area.

Ta.

Hello Jono,

I understand that you want to automatically enable the com addin in Word.
If I misunderstood your concern, please feel free to let me know.

According to the MSDN article
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms268871(VS.80).aspx.
Help->About->Dsiabled Addin is the only way to re-enable an add-in

As for the Word swtich, it does not contain to re-enable all the addin. But
it has a switch to disable all the add-ins.

You may refer this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/210565

Actually, when Word disable an addin, it add the following Reg Key

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\word\resiliency\disabledItems

So you may run a reg file to delete all the Reg Keys before you open the
word documents. Although we do not recommand since this is an undocument
way and work directly with register entry may cause other issues, this
seems to be the only workaround.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Wei Lu

Hi there,

Many thanks for this. I think I'll take a look at the reg route... I guess
the best way to deal with this is to have a short-cut to run word, but what
it actually does is delete the reg entry then launch word..

Cheers,

Jono
