general failure when clicking on hotlinks in emails received

D

David Neilson

When I click on a hotlink within an email I have received, it doesn't launch
Internet Explorer to see the link, but instead stops and gives me the
following error message...

General failure. The URL was: "http://www.mountreef.co.nz/". Application not
found

Any ideas?
Cheers,
David.

Reregister Internet Explorer as you default browser.
Instructions depend on the version of Windows and IE which you did not post.

Thanks, I've registered it but now get a new error...
"This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer. Please contact your system administrator."
I'm using Vista Ultimate, Outlook 2007 and IE7
Cheers,
David.

Start-> Default Programs-> Set default programs-> select Internet Explorer->
Set this program as default

If IE already has all its defaults here select Choose defaults for this
program and deselect them. Ok yourself out all open windows and then go back
to the Set Default Programs section, select IE and press Set this program as
default.

I've come across this error after upgrading ie6 to ie7 on a xpsp2
workstation. We worked around the problem by changing the contents of
key

HKLM\software\classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command

from

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

to

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

Interestingly the same problem/fix applies to firefox.

We also found that the case will reset if the default browser settings
are reset.

Hope this helps.

Vic

Thanks so much for the post. I looked everywhere on the Microsoft Help and
Support pages but found nothing about my error message. Found here and the
solution recommended worked like a charm.
