general question on baselines

I have a large project that is composed of many smaller projects. I would like to create one master schedule that has a minimal number of dates common to all the smaller project and then include all the smaller projects (these smaller projects do have dependencies on each other) into the master. However, the smaller projects will not have schedules that
are all developed at the same time. I want to be able to set a baseline and start tracking the individual project schedules before all the individual project schedules are complete and then add them into the master as they are done. I do not want to have to keep setting baselines in the master because I will have to track all the different project starts.
Can I use Insert->Project to insert the individual projects in the master and still maintain seperate baselines for each of the individual schedules ?

How does it work? Everytime I update a subproject, the master baseline dates are removed.
