General templates link not working

On one machine, the "General templates" link on the new document pane in Word
XP stops functioning, i.e. there is no response at all when clicked. All
other links in that pane work normally.
Both user and workgroup template locations are valid, and the same as a
number other machines we have.
Often closing Word and restarting rectifies this, sometimes a full restart
of Windows is necessary.
This can not occur for days, or happen each time Word is run.
I have done a full repair install of Office, which hasn't helped.
This is Word XP on Windows XP SP2.

This is very peculiar. Does anyone have any thoughts.

For ready access to the File | New dialog, I find it much more convenient to
reassign the New button on the Standard toolbar to the FileNewDialog
command. This fives me one-click access to the dialog even if the task pane
is not open.
