Generating number lists in Excel

I have a list of 4,075 names that I need number in the colum next to it
in consecutive order. Is there a command that I can use to create this
ordered list so that I do not have to input each, individual value?

one way:

Enter 1 next to the first name. Select the column next to the names.
Choose Edit/Fill/Series. Verify the Columns and Linear radio buttons are
checked, with a step value of 1. Click OK.

You could also enter a 1 in the first cell, then CTRL-click on the fill
handle of the cell (lower-right corner) and drag down as far as
necessary. When you release the mouse button, choose Fill Series from
the popup menu.
