Generic field code that is a simple counter?

Is there a field code that:

1. can be used anywhere, e.g., in running text, rather than in a
numeric bullet list,

and

2. is a simple counter, such as numbers the bullets in a numbered
list.

I want an unstructured field, i.e., it's not a footnote, etc., just a
generic, use anywhere field code.

In its first instance in the document, it displays a "1"; in its
second instance in the document, it displays a "2", . . . etc.

Use a SEQ field. Word's Help file provides a good explanation.
