Generic Resources

I have set up a generic resource and used in a project but I find that the
assignments don't get published and so are not on the reporting database. I
would like them to be published as per normal resources, as I extract this
information from the reporting database for resource reporting. The only
other option I can see is using non-generic resources (but not allowing logon
to Project server) - but then you lose the "Match" function in "Build Team".
Are there any other options?
(FYI - using Project Server 2007).

David:

The system does not publish assignments for generic resources by design.
Your only option in this case is to use regular work resources. You don't
lose the matching function if your resources are attributed correctly. You
can match non-generic to non-generic or generic resources.

Thanks for that Gary. I had mistakenly thought that you couldn't match
non-gen -> non-gen resources, but this was due to a bug that had confused my
tests (see "Resource Skill Matching" post).

I saw the post, and my partner Dale's reply. I'm testing this myself. We'll
let you know what we find.

Generic resource assignments are published. They appear on the My
Task page of the assignment owner. You cannot add them to your
timesheet (assignment owner). Assignments appear in Data Analysis
vIews (and so exist in the reporting database). A change in 2007 is
that generics no longer have an availability which is enormously
irritating as you could always control this by the max units setting.
Because 2007 lets you create a named resource without user privileges,
there's not a big difference between generics and named resources. In
fact because of the availability change I now create pseudo-generics
(genric flag is not set).

Mike --

I can concur with what you see about assignments being published for Generic
resources. I added Generic resources to a project, assigned one or more
Generic resources to each task in the plan, and then published. Voila!
They appear on the My Tasks page for ME! I thought this was a bug, but
thinking more about this, perhaps this functionality is by design. Whether
a bug or by design, it certainly works differently that Project Server 2003
in this regard. :)

Just to add to your statements:

The task assigned to the generic resource disappears from the MyTasks page,
when a resource self assigns the task..

Regarding Generic resources and Avialability I can report that I can see
their availability... Or is it me that totally misunderstand the concept of
availability?
