I have updated this machine several times in the past with the Office Update
system, allowing the Genuine Advantage to run without concern. This
particular time, G.A. has crapped out, telling me that my Office 2003 Pro is
not valid!
The GA version has probably got some glitch in the validation, with my box
having a mishmash of 2003 and 2007 office products, but there's no way to
report my issues without forking over $50 to tell Microsoft they've made a
mistake. I am not going to pay out $49 in support fees when I have done
nothing wrong.
I buy my user CALs, I don't cut corners on licensing. You can ask people
here how many I've pissed off for not letting them bend the licensing rules.
Maybe I've duplicated a key somewhere - that's certainly possible. Does the
GA tool say so? No. Does it help me resolve the issue? No. It just says
send money.
OEM software is a full version of the software which includes the
installation disc(s), Certificate of Authenticity, and product keycode/serial
number (if necessary). OEM software does not come in a retail box, doesn’t
include printed manuals, cannot be transferred (even if the original computer
breaks), and is not eligible for free technical support from the
manufacturer. Help files are normally included on the disc. OEM software is
only available in “full version†editions, meaning there are no OEM upgrade
products. OEM software can, however, be upgraded to future versions of the
software.
This does NOT mean OEM products are not entitled to Service Packs and other
updates. So, *please* don't go down the OEM gets no help path, especially
when that's what they get from the start.
