Get Data Does Not Include Excel

J

Jim Thomlinson

We are testing Access 2003. We have a 2000 Database that we converted to
2003. The 2003 version will not allow us to Get External Data from an Excel
File. (.xls is not included in the drop down list) I am guessing that this
is an install issue with the new version of Access. We tried removing and
reinstalling Access but no luck. Any suggestions?

Hi,

My name is Amy Vargo. Thank you for using the Microsoft Access Newsgroups.

It sounds like you need to register the Excel ISAM driver. To do so, close
Access, then open a search window and search for regsvr32.exe on your C:
drive. Leave this search window open. Now open a second search window.
Search for msexcl40.dll on your C: drive. Now align both search windows
side-by-side. Drag the icon for the msexcl40.dll file ontop of the icon
for regsvr32.exe. You should get a message that it succeeded. Now close
both search windows and start Microsoft Access. Open your database. Try
to import an Excel file and see if Excel files appear in the list.

I hope this helps! If you have additional questions on this topic, please
respond back to this posting.

Jim and Amy: This may not be the complete solution. After managing Excel
sheets into Access for years, my system all of a sudden stopped because
Microsoft had released a security patch and the latest jet database engine
patch needed to be installed.

Overall, I had to install all the latest patches to Office 2003 and Windows
and the jet patch, then re-register the ACCWiz.dll. Once all of this was
complete the import wizard worked fine.

After doing the updates, from the desktop, select Run and type in
regsvr32.exe accwiz.dll

Windows will return a pass fail message.
