Get rid of the blue icon?

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) I don't know what I did when I was typing a regular word document, but now there are blue icons all over my page - in between paragraph spaces, after paragraphs, and I tried opening a new document and it's behind my cursor. How do I get rid of it?

These are the non-printing characters, which can be very useful, for
instance when dealing with unwanted formatting. You can disable them by
hitting Cmd+8, or by clicking on the inverted "P" icon (¶) on the
Standard toolbar.

You cannot 'get rid of' the non-printing characters ‹ they are a major part
of what gives a document its structure & indicates what controls its flow.
You can choose to not have them displayed, but before you banish them from
view for all eternity it would be a good idea to understand what they mean &
learn how to use them:

The article illustrates Word for Windows but the content is applicable.
