When I put a macro in the toolbar, do I have to have the long silly name
before my macros:

Normal.Newmacros.SORT

Why on earth does word does this??

There's nothing "silly" about it. The entire string includes information
that tells Word where to look & what to look for when you click the command
button. Word uses that name because that's what the command (macro name)
*is* so that's all it knows to use. Would you rather it make up some
arbitrary name for you?:)

Regardless, it doesn't have to stay that way... While the Customize window
is displayed, Control(right)-Click the toolbar button & select Properties.
There you can label the button whatever you wish and choose an icon for it
if you'd like.
