getting a simple dash from double hyphens

I see a thread on "em dash" whatever the heck that is. But, as a new Word for Mac user (a new Mac user overall and not that happy with it), I am just trying to convert double hyphens into dashes automatically. A simple dash is all I'm looking for. Pretty please. thx

Hello & Welcome, Mark;

Sorry about your disenchantment but we'll try to help out if we can :)

For this specific issue go to Word> Preferences - AutoCorrect, click the
AutoFormat As You Type button, then check the box for Symbol Characters (--)
with Symbols (‹) in the Replace as you Type section. IOW, it works just like
in the PC version of Word if that's what you're accustomed to. The main
difference is that when Word for Windows came along it mimicked Preferences
as "Options" & stuck it in the Tools menu :)

As background info, there are a number of different length, thickness &
height "dashes" used in the typesetting industry. Each has a specific
purpose and many of the varieties are only available in high-end desktop
publishing apps ‹ and even there not all may be directly available from the
keyboard by default. Word does offer several choices in the Insert> Symbol -
Special Characters dialog.
