getting an available resources error in excel, how do I stop this

Am using a large excel spreadsheet effectively as a data base, with ranges
set up, I am using a separate excel sheet with a lot of Vlookups within the
roiginal database.

I keep getting a the message

excel cannot complete this task with available resources. choose less data
or close other applications

how do I increase my resources or is this a bug

I get the same message on W2K running office 2000 and XP Pro running office
2003 so I think this rally should be simple, however there is no help page
that tells you what to do if you get errors in excel

please help
