Getting Axis Labels to Fit

How can I get my axis labels to fit so that all of the label is showing? I've got a 3D column chart showing regions of the world on the x axis. But "North America" only shows "North" and "Pacific Asia" only shows "Pacific". I've reduced font size to 8, can't go any smaller cos it'll be illegible in PP or Word. So how do I make the text box for axis labels big enough to show the complete label?

You should jut be able to select the text box, and drag a corner to make it
the size you want.

Nope! When I select the axis, a rectangle appears but I can't select the corners. When I double-click, an axis format dialogue comes up, but when I select Text Box from the LH side, the Autofit check boxes are greyed out, so I can't select to resize.
Help some more, please!
