Getting "Error! Not a valid embedded object" in Word

Why am I getting "Error! Not a valid embedded object" when I try to place an Excel file as an object into a Word file. Have done so all the time; did it successfully just 4 days ago. Running Leopard and Office 2004. Installed all updates and still doesn't work. I can't generate sales proposals!
