Getting Hit Counter to work.

Dan

Thanks in advance for any advice. I am a novice in Front Page but learning
quickly. I have several sites up and running. I want to add hit counters
and the basic one that comes with FP is just fine for me. I've tried adding
a Hit Counter and it doesn't work. Here are the details. 1st. I started by
'Insert' 'Web Components' 'Hit Counter' 'Finish'. In properties, I select
one of the standard designs, I reset the starting number to '30' and '5'
digits. In 'Design' mode, I can see the hit counter numbers. 2nd. When
viewed in 'Split' mode, the HTML code for the counter is light gray (not red,
blue, or black). In 'Preview' mode, the location of the hit counter has
[Hit Counter] displayed. If I save the page (to my server), the live site
has the same [Hit Counter] displayed. 3rd. From my live site on the
internet, if I right click and then click on 'View Source' I can see the
HTML code. The line for the hit counter has additional code (not seen from
FP) which includes _vti_bin/FPCount.exe . In FP, my site does not have a
folder 'vti_bin' and there is no folder with a file named FPCount.exe . I am
not versed in HTML but I can grasp a few things. I assume that FP places a
script (FPCount.exe) to run the counter into a folder 'vti_bin' but this is
not in my FP workspace. Last 2 facts. My host server is Go Daddy. I have
the premium hosting plan with a main url and several folders below that one
where all of my sites live. The main url has (confirmed) FP extensions. The
folders (websites) below that one are covered in the FP extensions of the
main url. Finally, I set up a 'test page' with a hit counter installed so
you can see what I've done.

question, but thank you for your help.

FrontPage server extensions are not installed on your web. They must be in
order for FP components such as the hit counter to work. Contact Go Daddy
if you want the extensions, which will probably cost extra. Then, you'll
need to http publish, not FTP.

Tom, Thank you so much for your response. Like I wrote, I am a complete
novice at this but I learn quickly. I tried an experiment. I took my 'test
page', which is in a sort of 'sub folder' of my main URL (with verified FP
extensions) and copied it and then pasted it into the main URL area. I went
onto the internet and called up the page. Holy cow ... the hit counter was
there and it works perfectly. Apparently (I'm guessing), the FP extensions
are only on the main URL and not the sub URL's within my hosting plan. I'm
going to call Go Daddy and press them to fix this. On the subject of
publishing HTTP instead of FTP, I have to admit that I'm a little lost. I
thought that I was publishing HTTP. Is there a guide to explain the proper
way to publish? If time and space permits, I can explain the way I publish
and then update pages. Thanks again for the advice.
