Getting lots of Virus emails since using real address on forum

Pat

OK ... I made the mistake of using a real email address
when I posted 2 (TWO) emails on this forum at the end of
December.

Since then, I get 5+ emails daily that have virus'
attached. Since the email address I used was a secondary
address, and they look like they are coming from
Microsoft, or are saying they have been rejected emails
coming back to me, I know they have originated from this
forum.

Anyone else having this problem?

Regards,
Pat

Not me personally, but that's what happens when you use a real e-mail
address when posting on a newsgroup. Some people actually use applications
that harvest e-mail addresses from places like here, while some people will
have viruses that pick out e-mail addresses stored in popular e-mail
programs

Live and Learn ... guess the other forums I've signed up
for have better controls and/or more people with antivirus
software than this forum.

Good news is it's just an annoyance since my Antivirus
software protects me. It's not my primary email address
but one of many. I now use webmail before downloading any
emails getting rid of the garbage.

Sadly, NNTP, by definition, isn't controllable in any real sense.

Gee, only 5 a day? I get that many in an hour!

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the SWEN virus, all mail sent to my personal account will be deleted
without reading.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, Pat asked:

This isn't 'forum' per say. No one owns the newsgroups they are part
of Usenet. You are accessing the newsgroups via a web interface on the
Microsoft site.

If you aren't familiar with Usenet, it is a distributed bulletin board
system. When you post to Usenet it uses Network News Transfer Protocol
(NNTP) to transfer posts between 1000s of news servers all over the
world.

The newsgroups can be accessed through a newsreader, such as Outlook
Express, and there are many web sites, such as Microsoft or Google,
that provide a web interface to the newsgroups. If you have Outlook
Express this link will start OE and add this newsgroup for you:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.office.misc

Count yourself lucky though, a few months back when they started
harvesting email address from the newsgroups some were encountering
100s of email per day. Many had to abandon their email account as a
result. :-(

Go to the messages you posted in December and cancel them (in Netscape,
you right click on your posting and choose to "cancel message"; if using
Internet Explorer, it probably has a similar option).
