I've had Office X installed on my iBook G4 for over 2 years now with
no problems. A couple days ago I started getting the message
"Microsoft Office X cannot start because Microsoft Office is already
in use. Microsoft Office is being used by s p." ??!?? Then it
closes the application. Why is this happening? Who or what is "s
p?"

This may be just a coincidence, but the problem first occurred after I
installed a new Airport Express.

Help!

If I recall correctly, there were some issues with this in the early
versions of Office X. Make sure that it is up-to-date on all of your
computers. Download and install the latest Office X update, which is
10.1.9. It's available from Microsoft. See if that helps.

If not, do you have Office installed on more than one machine at home? I
believe you are allowed to install the software on a couple of machines, but
you can only use it on one at a time. If you want to use it on more than
one computer at a time, you have to buy another copy. If there are students
or teachers in the house, the Student & Teacher Edition allows you to get
multiple licenses at a substantially reduced price.

Hi Alex:

Yes, your new Airport Express is working just fine, and now your machine can
"see" the other machine on your network that is running Office with the same
product key.

You need to quit the applications on the other machine before you can use
them on yours. Minimise is not enough, they have to be Quit.

Cheers

John,
Thanks so much for your reply. It does seem like there is another
machine on my network using Office (because sometimes I don't get the
message) but we do not have another computer! We do live in close
proximity to our neighbors--could we be picking up their use?? My
previous Airport Express worked for 2 years without our encountering
this problem. Any other ideas?

Mickey,

thanks so much for your response. I did download the latest update
before writing in and it did not resolve the problem. And as you may
have seen in my reply to John, I don't have another machine. As I
said, Office worked just fine on my machine for 2 years. Any other
ideas?

only if you're on their network, or they're on yours. Is your airport
network secure?

I believe it is network secure--one must have the password to access
it.

Hi Alex:

It might be worth changing that password, just to make sure "they" haven't
cracked it.

It could also be worth asking to see if anyone has been using "Fast User
Switching" on your machine. If the other ID has left Word running, and it
can reach the network, that would do it...

Cheers
