Getting my number right

I am working on a cook book that I am inserting columns into the sections
where the ingredients are. I am also using text boxes and pictures in my
document.
Here is my problem. For some unknown reason, I cannot get my pages to number
consecutively. They will number fine until about the fourth page down, when
it wants to start renumbering all over again. I have tried the link to
previous section and that does not work. I have tried everything I can,
including rebuilding the pages and adding the footers last with the page
numbers. Nothing is working.
Any ideas?

Somewhere in there you have a section break, with the section set to
re-start page numbering. This can be hard to find if you have several
continuous section breaks on the same page -- if the section that restarts
the page numbering is entirely contained in the middle of a page, it will
have no headers or footers, so you can't fix the problem simply using the
'link to previous' button.

Switch to normal view and you'll see the section breaks explicitly. Often
this sort of problem means that your headers and footers are mucked up
generally -- in which case the least-effort solution is usually to delete
ALL the section breaks and start again. Alternatively, add enough empty
paragraphs to each section to force the section to straddle a page break --
then clean up the headers and footers, use the 'Link to previous' or
whatever, then delete the empty paragraphs.

Specifically to clear the page number re-start: click anywhere in the
section. Go to Insert > Page Numbers. Click Format. Set the page numbering.
Click OK to close the format dialog. Click Cancel to close the Page Number
dialog.
