getting pictures OUT of Word 97 document for use elsewhere

Robert M Jones

I am trying to copy pictures in a Word97 document (with writers
permission) for use on a web page. If I copy the picture and then paste
it into something like microsoft photo editor I get a rapid loss of
quality - a picture that is photo quality in Word 97 ends up like a gif
in MS Photo editor.
The word document came from Bulgaria, and because internet connections
there are both inefficient and expensive, I don't want to ask for them
to be sent individually as picture files.

Can someone advise me how to do this properly please? Many thanks.

Thanks. I tried that - I don't get that option in Word97 - just "Save as
html" - and the save dialogue for that option does not have any web
options to adjust.
When I save the file as html, the pictures all disappear from the
resulting htm file!

I'll keep playing.

Hi Robert,

MS Word 97 used an addin to create HTML pages.
Later versions have the features built in.
You can save as HTML to separate the graphics, or
if you save as HTML then in Word 97 you can right
click on a graphic and choose Save Picture As.
If the original graphic was a BMP it may be a GIF
on save, while JPEGs would generally stay as .JPG

Generally, there shouldn't be a drastic change
in graphics copied from Word 97 and pasted into
MS Office Photo Editor as a new image.
Are you using Smoothing in Image=>Resize?
What format and options are you using in File=>Save As.
Office 97 did some smoothing on insertion of graphics
which can make things appear different if you try
to enlarge a graphic. That's normal behavior of
a bitmapped graphic.

The Word 2000/2002 settings for resolution do not
change the quality of the graphic, they store the
pixel per inch count in the graphic in formats that
support it and that effects sizing.

Thanks for your help everyone. The save as html solution didn't work at
all in Word 97 as the images just got lost. But I discovered what was
causing the problem - when I cut and pasted into MS Photo Editor the
default save as... image quality was set to minimum. When I put the
slider up to maximum I got an image the same quality as I could see in
the Word 97 document. So I can now take those images and optimise them
with my image compression software for web use. Thanks again.
