Getting rid of a line in a Word document?

There's a line in a document and I have no idea how to get rid of it.
You can't highlight it, it doesn't appear to be a border. I've had
this happen before and had no success in removing it. Help? If you
would like, I can send the small sample which has the offending line
to you - it's only a couple of lines on a Word document.

Turn on the non-printing characters ( ¶ ), click in the immediately
paragraph above the line, then go to Format> Borders & Shading & click the
option for NONE to turn off the Paragraph Border.

It most likely was applied as a result of accidentally clicking the Borders
button on the Formatting Palette or the Formatting Toolbar or by typing
several successive asterisks, dashes, equals signs or underscores, then
pressing Return ‹ which applies an automatic bottom border.

You can Undo when it occurs or you can go to Tools> AutoCorrect> AutoFormat
As You Type to remove the check on "Symbol characters (- -) with Symbols
(‹)" to turn the feature off altogether.

Thank you very much - the process for removing the line/border
worked. I thought it was a border, but never was able to deal with it
until your suggestions. I'm sure this line came from typing several
dashes in a row which became expanded to the line.

I did also take a look at the Tool panels you talked about and the
Autoformat replace as you type option on symbol characters is indeed
unchecked. So the mystery is still sorta there - at least I can get
rid of it when it happens.

Thanks

My error :>}... The check you want to remove is in that same dialog, but
it's the one for Borders.
