Getting rid of a watermark

Swifty

Word 2003. During preparation of a manual I added a watermark, "Draft" on
the first page of the document.
Now, I cannot get rid of it, because word thinks there is no watermark even
though I can see it. I can add another watermark, in which case they both
appear.
Am I going to have to start with a blank document, copying the entire
contents in order to get rid of this watermark?
I think I can cheat, and cover it up with a picture, but it will still be
there, haunting me...

Hi, Swifty. I'm guessing you probably have one or more Word continuous section breaks in the first page of the document, and the watermark is anchored to the second Word section. To test this theory, click at the beginning of the first line of the SECOND page of the document, then look at the status bar just above the Start button at the bottom left corner of your screen. Does the status bar indicate Section 3 or greater? If so:
1. Press the UpArrow key until the status bar indicates Section 2.
2. Press Ctrl+Enter to insert a page break.
3. Delete the watermark.
4. Delete the page break you inserted in step 2.
