Getting Rid of Highlight

I sometrimes use the highlighter to temporarily mark passages for
corrections at a later time, but then, when I'm finished rewriting, I can't
get rid of the highlight without using the format brush. This wouldn't be a
problem except that much of the material has formatted characters
(subscripts and the like), and these get wiped out by the format brush. Is
there a way to make the highlight go away without losing all other
formatting?

From Word Help:

Remove highlighting from part or all of a document

1.. Select the text you want to remove highlighting from, or
press CTRL+A to select all of the text in the document.
2.. On the Formatting, click the arrow next to Highlight, and
then click None.

"On the Formatting" should of course read "On the Formatting
toolbar."

You could also select the text, then Insert > Comment.
This will highlight the text, you can make a note to
yourself, and when you are done, right click the
highlighted text and delete the comment.
