Getting Rid of Messenger when using Outlook 2003

I don't like windows Messenger and I've tried to prevent it from
opening when I use Outlook (Tools/Options/Other--Disable Smart name
Tags) but this didn't do anything, it still opens when I open Outlook.

I thought that you could disable the messenger service
altogether(msconfig/services) but I couldn't locate the service for the
messenger application.

If anyone could help me I would be forever grateful.
