getting rid of paragraph signs in Word 2007

I've hit a button by mistake and my document is full of formating
signs. Can someone tell me how to turn this off? Also, how can I turn
off auto-correct and get UK rather than US spelling?

I really think this new version is a retrograde step.

Ctrl+Shift+8 toggles the nonprinting formatting characters on/off.

Office button -> Word Options -> Proofing -> AutoCorrect Options ->
AutoCorrect tab. You might also want to look at AutoFormat As You Type.
Setting UK spelling as your default would be done using Office 2007's
Language Settings.

Control Shift 8 - who thought that one up? Thanks a lot, works a treat.

(On the US keyboard it's just "Ctrl-*", which isn't unreasonable --
but keyboard shortcuts don't follow characters around the keyboard,
and people with their asterisk in a different place don't get that
command when they type Ctrl-*.)

And there's also a Show/Hide ¶ button in all versions of Word.

Yes, it seems folks never associate the ¶ on the button with the ¶s in their
documents.
