Getting Started Pane won't turn off in Word 2003

David Bryant

I have tried turning off the Getting Started Task Pane in Word 2003 by
deselecting Tools | Options | View | "Startup Task Pane" but it still comes
back.

I also tried renaming the registry entry for
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER.Software.Microsoft.Office.11.0.Word.Data" and allowing
Word to go back to its default settings. Again, it won't go away.

Please help.

Thanks,
David

Did you restart your computer after unchecking the box? Often an orphan word
instance is hiding in the background and keeps the old value around.

Hi David,

More than likely caused Adobe PDFMaker. When add-ins are present the
task pane is dismissed before Word starts. Adobe tried to 'workaround'
this issue by incorporating a Reg hack into their installation.

Here is an article that provides more information and contains a link
to an add-in which will make the Registry modifications for you:

I do, in fact, have Adobe Acrobat installed. I installed the add-in as
described below and it seems to work. I am a bit scared at the thought that
I have to install an add-in to fix an add-in. Oh well.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

Glad to hear all is working for you now.

Using an add-in to fix an add-in is a little strange. ;-)

It may help to know the Task Pane Controller does return the default
functionality of the task pane when add-ins are present and that can
only be accomplished through code.
