getting the cursor to move to certain cells after hitting "enter"

Trying to figure out how to get the cursor to move from column D to the next
line and into column A when I hit enter after typing my text in column D.
Any suggestions?

If it's a "fresh" (hasn't been modified previously) area of a sheet this
will usually happen by default: simply Tab from cell to cell to complete the
first Row. When you press Return the active cell will move to the next row
beneath the cell you started in on the previous row.

You can also use the List Manager or (especially if the area is previously
used) you can pre-select the range of cells & use either Tab or Return/Enter
to move by row or by column. You can also use the Shift Key with Tab or
Return to go the opposite direction.

Hello,
I currently on PC but here you can set it in Tools>options>view>move
selection after enter. Have a look in Excel Preferences if there is
something similar, I can check it tomorrow.

Little Creature is right on. In Mac Excel it's Excel > Preferences > Edit
Move the section after RETURN. Then you can choose which direction you wish
the cursor to move after you press Return.

Hi l_c -

Yes Mac XL has the same setting - Excel>Preferences - Edit, where you can
specify Up, Down, Left or Right, but I don't think that's what the OP was
referring to.

In the more current versions, if you move along a row - such as you would
when entering captions - by pressing Tab or Right Arrow the selector drops
to the next row beneath your first caption rather than directly down to the
cell below your last caption when you press Enter/return. IOW, if you type
captions into C10:G10 & press Enter/return the selector goes _back over_ to
C11 rather than _straight down_ to G11.

However, this only works in an unmodified range of cells. It's one of the
"intuitive" features that only intuits when it feels like it:)

Bob tx for note, I see, the difference is that I ment after entry
C10:G10 and pressing Enter/return to C11 rather than to G11. I'm used
to it. If you are doing measurements such as paramaters A B C and have
a lot of samples then I'm happy to put entry for all parameters for
each sample (1 sample = 1row) and then hit Enter to go home and down.
Going to g11 would be crazy for me, sorry :) I cannot think about any
useful layout reason for that - either you have two colums starting at
same row or one row with multiple rows, but there is a nice proverb
saying: No objections for any taste
