Getting vba Macros to work again in Word 2004 for Mac

T

Toby Anne

The macros I wrote myself for my work as a translator quit working in office
2004 - trying to open or run them causes Word to shut down. Reinstalling did
not help.

SOOO I bought Word for Mac 2008, only to learn that VBA macros are not
supported in that version.

1. Are there any patches or fixes out there for Word for Mac 2004? Can I
download something?

2. Or - when will Word for Mac 2010-11 be out, and will it include support
for VBA Macros?

3. Or is there another solution you recommend? I wrote about 30 Macros, each
of them with more than 50 commands. It's hard to start from scratch.

4. Can Word 2008 be made to work with Macros?

THANK YOU!

Hi Anne:

Mac Word 2004 works fine with macros.

Reinstalling never does help on a Mac: the files that get damaged are not on
the CD to be installed, so if reinstalling makes any change at all, it will
make the problem worse by injecting out-of-date modules into the mix.

Word 2011 will be out "Holiday season 2010" according to Microsoft.

Your problem sounds like a corrupt Normal template. To fix it:

1) Quit all Microsoft Office applications.

2) Make sure Word 2004 is FULLY up-to-date with the updates that have been
released. Make sure that OS X is also.

3) Then find and re-name your Normal template. It's simply called Normal,
it has no extension, and unless you have moved it, it's in
/Volumes/Data/Users/~/Documents/Microsoft User Data

It can be anywhere on your system, and there can be more than one: search
your computer for files named "Normal" to make sure you have them all.
Change the name to something you will remember, for example "Old Normal.dot"

4) Now re-start Word. It will create a new blank Normal template.

5) Go to Tools>Macros>Organizer.

6) Click Close File in the Left pane to close the current document.

7) Then click Open File on that side and open your old Normal template.
You will see your macros.

8) Copy them to the new Normal by selecting them and copying right-to-left.

Now quit Word, saying "Yes" if prompted to save.

Your old macros will now work, although you will need to re-assign any
keystrokes because those are stored in the old template.

Hope this helps
