Gif Animation Background & Converting 2004 Presentations

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

When I insert a clear-background gif animation from The Animation Factory it shows with a white background in ppt 2008. This did not happen in ppt 97-2004 (background showed clear). Is there a way to make the background clear in ppt 2008? And is there a way to convert ppt 2004 presentations to ppt 2008 without re-inserting each animation as a movie instead of a picture?
