.gif animations

I can't get .gif file animations to play in my slide shows - even the ones you download off the office site Can anyone help?

This is a known issue in PowerPoint 2008.
You can find mention of it in the help screens
(of all places). It says:

Animated GIF files do not play in slide show mode
You can insert and save animated GIF (.gif) file formats in PowerPoint 2008,
but you cannot play them in slide show mode. To correct this issue, on the
Insert menu, point to Movie, and then select the file that you want.
------------------

You can also go into the Custom Animations toolbox,
Media Options and specify whether to loop the animated
file or not.
