When I drag gif files into an excel spreadsheet, they turn into movies... any idea why? They are corrupting my documents...

Primarily because dragging any kind of image into any kind of document is
one of the most blatantly irresponsible "techniques" ever introduced - Mac
or PC :) It completely bypasses the receiving app's graphic import filters
& forces the app to "guess" at what's being dumped into its file structure.

In this case it's probably getting hug up on GIF's ability to support
animation & that's causing Excel to choke - animation isn't supported in
Excel files.

Try using Insert> Picture> From File instead of the "drag & hope" method.
