GIF images appear as red X's in Normal View

I have FrontPage 2000. Anytime I insert a GIF image while creating a page
in the Normal View, all I get is a box with a red X. The image appears fine
in the Preview View though. JPEG images appear fine in both views. Can
anyone tell me why this is happening and how to fix? Thanks.

Saving the GIF's as JPEG's works, but I lose transparency and animation that
GIF's allow me to use.
