Hey, don't complain. I'm bound to win because I have Windows 98SE and don't
plan to to XP.

US/Canada only :|
Sigh... (all these UK Publisher users who want Publisher 2003 left in the
lurch...)
I'll have to organise a UK one in April :)

Don, I not only recommend upgrading to Publisher 2003, but I highly
recommend replacing 98 with XP for stability and security. Just my 2¢ ;-)

My biggest concern going to XP is will my existing programs work? Some are
no longer supported, i.e., Parsons Address Book which I have two files
containing in excess of 2000 names, addresses, phone numbers, email
addresses, a multitude of envelope sizes for printing, a data base for
lodge, business, neighborhood, family, and more. I wonder if Act can do,
and at a lower cost???

David from his Winnebago in the shadows of Uluru (trying to impress David)
suggested I go to File Maker. I did a preliminary try of it and was
impressed with it but it goes for $300+/- which is a bit serious on my
software budget. Add the $300 to the cost of XP ($200) and there goes a
grand. Then this makes me think if I get serious about File Maker and XP,
shouldn't I consider upping my computer from a 1.2 gig cpu ASUS TSLUC-2 with
10K rpm SCSI drives, to a new system? Then of course one should consider a
new 24" Samsung stereo flat panel. And the dominos continue to fall.

All of this results with new learning curves which when one is in their
seventies spends serious remaining time before going to room temperature.
But the bright side is, I have a better chance of reaching 100 than any high
school youngster!<G>

Then doing all of the above, Windows '05 shows up on the store shelves. And
using the words of Balboa, "It's the great circle route."
BTW, Balboa is a VP of Sales up in Kirkland.<G>

Don, If you want to try something a tad less expensive, works with XP, that
will directly merge data with Publisher, and accommodate all your data base
needs, then try the database in Works 4.5a. I know, I know...its an oldie,
but still a goody. Even David will endorse it, me thinks. If interested:

Perhaps acquire a new copy of Works 4.5 for around $15 (inc P&P ) here:
http://store.yahoo.com/dirtcheapsoftware/micwor45oemf.html

Then go here http://tinyurl.com/sgx2 for the Y2k patch which fixes a number
of small bugs, and converts it to 4.5a.

As to upgrading to Publisher 2003...you know the downside of trying to build
and manage your website with that version...but you could have both.

Back to lurking mode now....DavidF

Absolutely MS Works 4.5a. All the versions of Works after 4.5a are complete
and total garbage/rubbish/trash/junk

Works 4.5a would be absolutely ideal for Don's jobs.

I do have Works 4.5a. It came with my Micron computer back in '97. Since
then moved the hard drive, Adaptec SCSI card, Plextor CD & ZIP 100 drive to
a 1.2 gig box.

Been using Lotus 1-2-3 as a necessity when I went from VIP Professional
(Atari ST Lotus clone days) when the 1 meg ST could no longer handle my
spreadsheets. In the final days it took 5 minutes (8mb cpu) to load a file
and the same to do a reCalc. Now I'm up to SmartSuite 9.8 and chances are
Works 4.5a isn't going to like some of the existing files. I'll have to do
some experimenting with Word.

There is always something to make the challenge. Keeps the mind alive.

Yep, I've got 4.5a and will be doing some experimenting. Falls under
keeping the "grey matter" healthy in the retirement years.
