Glitch in Outlook 2000 running under Windows XP ???

I recently got a new computer which runs Windows XP Pro. I installed my old
Office 2000 on the new computer, and I noticed that Outlook no longer
automatically formats telephone numbers when you enter them in the Contacts.
It used to be the case (when I was running it under Win 98 SE) that you
could enter the 10 digits of a phone number in any haphazard manner you
wished, and the software would format it perfectly, placing parentheses
around the area code and inserting a hyphen after the first three digits of
the number. But I can't get it to do that in this new installation (under
Windows XP). I searched through the menus looking for somewhere where this
featured was turned off or on. I couldn't find it. Is there such a switch
somewhere to turn this feature on? Or is it possible it could lose this
useful functionality just because it's now running under Windows XP? You'd
think the functionality of the program wouldn't decline with a new and
supposedly "improved" operating system. Can anyone please advise me if it's
possible to restore this phone number autoformatting capability?

Outlook will automatically mask phone numbers once your dialing location is
set correctly:
Control Panel > Phones and modems...
