Global add-in getting uninstalled unintentionally

L

Larry

In Word 97, if I have a template installed as a global add-in, and I
then attach the active document to a different template than the one
it's currently attached to, the global add-in gets uninstalled. (The
gloal is still in the Add-ins box, but unchecked.)

This doesn't seem to happen if the global add-in is in the Startup
folder.

Why is this happening? And is there any way I can prevent it?

Thanks.

Hi Larry,

For it to be a global add-in, it must be installed in the Word Startup
folder.

I mean a global template then, which can be anywhere. You can take any
template and add it to the global template collection so that it appears
in the list, and then check it so that it's installed.

This document for which you are changing the template, is it ever attached
to this global template we are talking about? If so, that's not really what
you use global templates for. Are there macros involved somewhere?

No, the document is not attached to the global template.

To recap:

There are Templates A, B, and C. C, located in the Templates folder,
is checked as a global template. The active document is attached to A.

I change the attached template from A to B.

C is no longer checked as the global.

Hi Larry,

While it will be of little consolation to you, I cannot replicate that
behaviour in Word 2003 whether I change the attached template manually or by
using code.

Hmm, trying it again, the problem only seems to happen when I change the
attached template through some automatic means. When I change it
manually, it seems to be ok.

Just a comment. I keep most of my global templates in a utilities folder.
The ones that I want to use every time I start Word are loaded by another
global template that is in the Startup folder. While global templates do not
need to be in the Word Startup folder, they should not be in the document
templates folder. Global templates serve different purposes from document
templates and it would be rare (if ever) that you would want to do both in a
single template.
