Is there any way in Word 2000 to globally delete all
comments in a long document, rather than one at a time?

Ctrl+H.
In the Find what, type: ^a
In the Repalce with box, don't put anything.
Hit Replace all.
You can find this and more under Edit-Replace, then hit the More and Special
buttons.

Hope this helps!

Use the Reviewing Toolbar. There's a button for deleting
comments, and there's an option there to Delete all
comments in document.

I've only used this once myself since upgrading to XP(in
5 VERY LARGE documents), and am not yet aware of any
issues with this method.
