I am running MS Project 2003 and Project Server. When I open a number of
projects I notice a message in the lower left hand portion of the screen
something to the effect "opening resglobal" and I generally have a
significant time between closing one project and accessing another project
already opened. What is project doing when closing one project and going to
another project that is already opened.

Project saves data in an absurdly inefficient way, so the delay you're
seeing is a result of this. You probably have large schedules with many
assignments, which take time to transmit to the database. There are two
things that can help speed things up: A nice clean network pathway to the
server and I've seen additional RAM help if you don't already have at least
one gig. The good news is that this is completely rearchitected in 2007.
