Global Settings for normal.dot message

It seems every time I close Word (2002) I get a message
saying something to the effect of :
Your Global Settings have been changed...effecting
normal.dot template. Do you want to save this change?<
Any experience w/ this? Only want to change settings doc
to doc. Why is normal changing each session?

Did you get Word as part of Works Suite?

Hello. I upgrated from Word 98? to 2002 and did not
install w/ Works Suite. Have an old edition of Works from
before but rarely use. Also have FrontPage and always
wondered what all the vti cnf files are, but that's for
another forum. have had Ofc2002 on OS for over 1 1/2
yrs., have had no oroblem, and only started seeing
message 1 mo ago. MBG is its in preferences/tools. May
have tweaked something by mistake.

I asked about Works Suite because the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word
is the most common cause of this problem, but other add-ins can also cause
it (usually by putting a button on the toolbar at startup and removing it at
shutdown--a stupid procedure--which causes Word to see that Normal.dot has
changed). Look in Tools | Templates and Add-ins to see what add-ins are
loaded (but note that COM add-ins won't be shown; you can track them down
using the instructions at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm) and
perhaps figure out which one is the likely culprit. In any case, you can try
removing them one at a time from Word's Startup folder, restarting and
closing Word after each removal, until you find which one is responsible.

What a quirk! Have followed your advice and still
spinning my wheels. Think I iso'd the problem bur can't
ferret out the 3rd party add-in/plug-in that apparently
did a no-opt install. Have cleared out Coms, have run Win
searches for .dot w/o results. Spent 1/2 hr in Registry
and just can't locate the culprit. Are there any ares in
registry that you could point me to? THX for taking the
time.

I don't see this as likely being a Registry issue, but I don't have much
experience with these matters. Perhaps Office MVP Beth Melton can help sort
this out?

I agree. the registry hasn't caused the prob, but might
be able 2 delete add-in culprit if I can find location.
Will go through procedures again. Will get back when i
find solution. TA Michael

FWIW "Normal.dot already exists" or "Normal.dot has been modified" can
be caused by a number of possibilities. To name a few:

- Global template or add-in
- Using Word as the email editor in Outlook
- Macro Virus
- Norton AV
- Bug starting Word from the Quick Launch bar - using a double-click
instead of a single-click
- Incorrect permissions assigned to the user templates folder

assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Hi Michael,

Take a look under Tools/Templates and Add-ins and see if there are any
add-ins in the list. If you find any search for the file name and move
them out of the folder.

If you checked for COM add-ins then that should take care of any
add-ins loaded via the Registry.

Additionally have you check for any macros that could be modifying
your Normal.dot upon starting Word? Take a look under
Tools/Macro/Macros and see if there are any macros in the list you
didn't create or if there is an AutoExec macro.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

The most usual changes are customization of toolbars, recording macros,
adding AutoText entries. Less benign is updating styles on the template from
changes made to styles in the document, especially with the option of
changing style definitions to conform to formatting in the document. If the
user isn't making changes, the likely source is a poorly-written Add-In like
the Works Add-In. Least likely, but still possible is a macrovirus.
