GMAIL alternate address and Entourage: Howcan I use Entourage to send emails using analternate email

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

My main address for my gmail account will hook up to the IMAP server through Entourage fine, and send and receive. When I try to create an account using an alternate email address (which is not an @gmail account but goes to the same inbox) it will not connect. I tried it as a POP server and it would receive email but not send it.

Is there anyway I can use Entourage so that when I send email, it can be from my alternate address instead of my main gmail address?

You have two options.

1) set Entourage correctly
2) forward your account to Gmail and it will download with your gmail
account

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

Most users are having problems with SMTP because it might require
authentication. Because of recent server updater for security many providers
have changed what they require to authenticate. Most are pretty good about
sending you a notice, but other just leave you hanging. There are several
different options for authentication making it difficult to guess at what's
needed. Your ISP should provide you with exactly what to set. We have
several examples for some of the major ISPs listed on the Entourage Help
Page. If you still have problems after checking the site, let us know what
provider you are using.

FWIW, I have accounts with Comcast, pair.com, mvps.org, HotMail and Gmail.
Once you get the account set correctly, take screenshots including the
advanced settings and all tabs views.

Diane, if I read the OP correctly, he is trying to "relay" mail from a non
Gmail account (call it Account X) through a Gmail SMTP server. I don't know
if that will work, but if it will, the way to do it should be as follows:
Set up the SMTP server for Account X the same way as for the Gmail account,
but in Advanced sending options, be sure to check "SMTP server requires
authorization" and to select "Log on using" (NOT "Use same settings as
receiving mail server").
For the user identification, enter your GMAIL account name and password, NOT
the Account X ID and password.

I haven't tried this with Gmail, but my att.net and comcast.net accounts let
me relay with this method. Gmail may or may not.

Thank you for translating, that was exactly what I needed. I will try your suggestion.

Your suggestion seems perfect, but I don't think it's going to work. The gmail account will set up fine, but the same account with the alternate email address won't. Ah well.

Your message is not clear to me. Did you use the alternate email address as
the account ID for the SMTP server, or did you use the Gmail address
(including @gmail.com)? You must use the latter.

I did the latter, and now it's working. So your instructions really were perfect.

My problem now is that it will send, but it says on sent emails:

From: My Name ([email protected])

In order to use the feature I need it to say on outgoing emails:

From: My Name ([email protected])

Change the header on that account.

Note that this will only be the suggested return address - senders can still
choose to contact you from your sending address - for example in Entourage,
the Reply command will reply to the default reply address, but the Reply to
Sender command will reply to the sending address regardless of whether a
Reply-to header is present.
