usOutlook 2007 running on Vista Business on a Lenovo X301. Outlook has been
installed for a while and is working.

Is there a way to get the Gmail emails to appear? (I have tried the Outlook
connector and port 995, but it hasn't worked so far)

gmail doesn't use the connector - it uses either pop3 or imap, depending on
what you have enabled in your gmail account settings.

So after defining a POP or IMAP account in Outlook, did you also enable
POP or IMAP access in your Gmail account? It's part of the instructions
they provide on how to setup access using a local e-mail client.
