going crazy with numbered lists

I am a medical transcriptionist. The doctor likes his diagnosis/assessment
line to read as follows:

A: 1. blah blah blah
-- 2. blah blah blah
3. blah blah blah

(you get the idea). However, since I am starting the numbered list on the
same line as A: it won't continue with numbering. The only way I can get it
to automatically do a numbered list is to start on the next line below the A:
The doctor does not like this. If I try to start a numbered list on the
same line by clicking the symbol above, it will number the A: as well. (1.
A:) This is not what he wants. How can I start an automatic numbered list
on the same line as A: but AFTER the A:?

You can use a LISTNUM field for numbering. Alternatively, set this up in
two-column format, applying the A,B,C,... format to the first column, and
the Arabic numbering to the second.
