Good intro book for Project?

Is there a good introductory book for project management in general
and Project in particular?

I am not managing a 1,000-person project and I don't need to get a PhD
in resource leveling. I just want a good solid general tutorial on how
to get a moderate project done with a minimum of overhead. Maybe just
some general principles.

Looking on Amazon I see a number of books (in order of "customer
rating):

1. Complete Idiot's Guide to Project Management with Microsoft Project
2000 (Complete Idiot's Guide), by Ron Black, Que Development, 5 stars,
$19.

2. Microsoft Project Version 2002 Inside Out, by Teresa S. Stover (5
stars). $32.

3. Successful Project Management with Microsoft Project 2000 CD-ROM,
by Jack Gido, James P. Clements, 5 stars, $89.

4. Dynamic Scheduling With Microsoft Project 2002: The Book by and for
Professionals, by Eric Uyttewaal, 5 stars, $70. I am guessing this is
an advanced book.

5. Microsoft Project Version 2002 Step, by Step by Carl S. Chatfield,
Timothy D. Johnson, 3.5 stars, $28.

6. Microsoft Project 2002 For Dummies, by Nancy Stevenson (unrated),
$18.

I've generally found the "for dummies" type books easy, but lacking in
depth. The Step-by-Step books have usually been good for beginers to
intermediates. I'm inclined to try the Inside Out book.

Any comments?

The Step-by-Step books are good for tutorial and first steps, and
Inside-Out will be there for the longer term (learning and reference).

Get a copy of Stephen Devaux's book "Total Project Control" (Wiley)

It does not give blow by blow instructions on MSP but it does describe the
critical path method and other things very clearly, which is a pre-requisite
for using MSP properly.
