Google Desktop and MS Word 2003

I am using Word 2003 (11.8313.8221) SP3 on a PC running Windows XP Home SP3.
At some point in the past I installed Google Desktop (or agreed to have it
installed). There are two services "GoogleDesktop" and
"GoogleDesktopManager" that probably came with it. There is a COM Addin to
MS Word, "Google Desktop Office Addin" that probably came with it as well.
Disabling the services (with MSconfig) had the effect that Word did not offer
any Save or Save As Dialog Window, plus it kept saying that normal.dot had
been modified when closing word. This "cause and effect" association was not
realized at the time. KB article 291352 discussed the repeated messages
about normal.dot having been altered, and recommended disabling the COM
Addin. After doing that, the Save and Save As menu tabs worked again.
Uninstalling Google Desktop might have been a better choice, rather than
disabling the services.

When making a new post one is offered two boxes: question or comment. I
chose comment. So, it is true that there wasn't a question.

I can report further study of this matter. I enabled the two services
mentioned (using msconfig) and I also enabled Google Desktop to start. The
problem of MS Word not offering a Save dialog when the COM Addin "Google
Desktop Office Addin" is active is still present.

I could continue this study by uninstalling Google Desktop and then
reinstalling it, but I'm not yet ready to invest the time to do so.

A question might be: "Do others see this behavior?"

Understood. Fortunately, I refused to install the Google Desktop (and
similar offerings from Yahoo, etc.) because the one time I did install it,
it caused Word problems. I can't remember the exact nature of the problem,
but it may well have been the one you are seeing.

Alan, Terry: I used to have Google Desktop and found other problems as well,
with clashes with Java, etc.; so it was banned by our corporate environment.
Since then I have been using Copernic Desktop Search to great success and
satisfaction and have not bemoaned the loss of Google Desktop.
Hope this helps
