Got a problem with Word 2004 and footnotes

I have a long Word 2004 document containing over 100 footnotes. I started to put the footnotes at the end of the paragraph in which they appeared before I figured out how this is done in Word (which allows them to be hidden or visible at the reader's choice).

After I finished the document with all the footnotes I only have one such footnote remaining in the text, but when I delete the last "hanging indent" (the footnote number) all my footnotes disappear and indeed are erased fromthe file. Does anyone know any way to delete the footnote number without erasing all the footnotes?

I think you're talking about endnotes or citations as used in journals.
Footnotes usually go at the bottom of a page. Endnotes go at the end of
a chapter or section.

To do endnotes, you can either do the in-line [1] version of the
superscripted version with numbers in brackets. But you have to format
those yourself.

Footnotes are always superscripted with the text reserved at the bottom
of the page with a special separator. You can use whatever characters
you want but if you number them, Word keeps track. Once you delete the
last one, they're REMOVED from the document. Gone. Phft.

Don't mix the styles. And you might want to invest in a bibiography
database system like Endnote.

I'm pretty sure they're footnotes because they show up or disappear when I choose the option Footnotes under View.

So nothing can be done about them?
