Hi Lucothea,
The Frontpage themes (*.elm) that Word uses contain small graphics that are tiled (repeated) to complete a background. Netbkgnd.gif
is extracted from the .elm file when you apply the theme from inside of Word. The NetBkgnd.gif is 1600 pixels wide by 5 pixels high
(and uses a nominal resolution of 96 Pixels per inch (PPI) [Windows standard screen resolution], so it's about 16 2/3" wide but only
5/100ths of an inch high). It is a gradient, going from bright yellow to white (left to right).
When you print to a PDF printer check the printer advanced properties. If you're printing at 600 PPI then the graphic is 'seen' as
being only 2 1/3"W, (1600pixel width divided by 600 PPI resolution) so you see it repeating as vertically 'banded'
If the PDF is intended for onscreen viewing you can reduce the PPI (or dots per inch) in the printer properties to 96 to remove the
banding.
Another method would be to apply the theme then use File=>Web Page preview or File=>Save as Web Page filtered. That will give you a
copy of the netbkgnd.gif file to use. You can then change the way you applied the theme in Word by unchecking the [x] background
image choice and then use
Format=>Background=>Fill Effects=>Texture
and browse to the NetBkgnd.gif file. In this instance Word will control the tiling rather than the theme .ELM instructions (CSS
files) telling Word how to apply the background and it should then be a smooth gradient when printing to a PDF file.
==========
Bob -
I created a new document in Word and chose a Theme from the pre-set formats.
The one chosen was "Network". From what I can tell, the background seems to be a picture called "netbkgnd" not a gradient fill. It
does not tell me what kind of file type the picture is. When I change the theme to another option, the same thing happens.>>

I hope this helped you,
