Gradual or Gradient Transperency

Good Morning!
I wish to fade shapes and images (jpg & png & gif) from opaque in the center
to fully transparent at the edges. I would like to do this using rectangular
and/or oval masks. I would apply this to one or more objects/images in a
given Visio drawing. By way of reference, you can examine the type of effect
I am trying to achieve at: http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Quickmask/ It shows
retangular and irregular rectangular examples. I would also need an oval
fade.
Thank You!

The closest you could do is make shapes that you put on top of your image.

You'd make a white shape that shaded from 0% transparency white to 100%
transparency. The corners will still be difficult, however.

Visio concentrates on "business drawings" and has deemed it necessary to put
in lots of fancy illustration features, for better or for worse.

Or you could edit the image in an outside application like photoshop and
import the feathered end-product.

Hope this helps,
